The author

Hi, I'm Brett Knott.

I write middle-grade fantasy for the readers I know best — my three children, my eight grandchildren, and the thirty years' worth of kids I've worked with in the school system. They're the ones who taught me what kids actually want from a book: imagination first, character along the way.

Quest for the Mylor is the first of seven books in the Ring of Knowledge series. Seven magical doors. Seven tests. One prince who thinks this'll be easy — and an invisible cat named Minx who knows better.

Along the way, readers may learn something about the world at large and about themselves — what it means to be responsible, respectful, and a host of other attributes needed to be king, or to be a great kid.

Please join me on this journey through magical realms, imaginative encounters, and steadfast friends as we search for the Ring of Knowledge.

— Brett, on writing the series

Why I write

Imagination leads. Character follows.

Three kids of my own. Eight grandkids. Thirty years in schools. That's a lot of bedtimes and a lot of read-alouds, and the lesson is always the same: imagination has to come first. The wonder has to be real. Then character can follow.

The Ring of Knowledge series is built that way. Seven doors. Seven tests. Real magic, real stakes, real friends. The lessons come along — about responsibility, respect, what it means to be king or just a great kid — but the lessons never lead. The story does.
